Texas Hill Country at a glance
With a warm climate, charming small towns, wide-open spaces and natural beauty, Texas Hill Country is a gem in the heart of the Lone Star State. Located west of Austin and north of San Antonio, the region offers something for everyone.
Hill Country is dotted with incredible (and unique) outdoor places, like Jacob’s Well in Wimberley. This popular swimming hole is actually a 140-foot-deep submerged cave. Another popular attraction is Enchanted Rock, a pink granite dome-shaped rock that offers sweeping views. It’s less than a mile to the top, but you’ll spend most of it walking up the rock itself, so pace yourself.
For those with an appreciation of vintage items and a love for shopping, Round Top is known for its great antique shopping. Hill Country is also a growing wine region. The Texas Hill Country American Viticultural Area covers nearly 9 million acres, and some 50 wineries dot the landscape in towns like Stonewall, Wimberley and Johnson City, the latter of which is home to a winery housed in a castle.
