Durango at a glance
Located in the southwestern corner of Colorado near the New Mexico border, this town of less than 20,000 is an active traveler’s dream destination. There are hikes to enjoy, rivers to raft, lakes to fish, and trails to cycle during warmer months. Winter brings snow to ski areas like Purgatory Resort, Hesperus Ski Area and Chapman Hill, so pack your skis, snowboard or snowshoes.
Year-round, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a must-ride. This historic railroad takes you high into the mountains of the San Juan National Forest (as it has for the last 140 years) and the views are just as breathtaking as ever.
Drive 35 miles west along Highway 160 to the entrance of Mesa Verde National Park, easily one of the most amazing archeological sites in the country. Between 500 and 1300 AD, Ancestral Puebloans inhabited this area, building and living in 600 incredible cliffside dwellings. Today, these well-preserved dwellings are yours to tour, with some sites available for self-guided exploration and others accessible on a guided tour from a park ranger.
