A boardwalk leads to an overlook on Hilton Head Island, one of the best spring break ideas for families.
August offers up one last chance to chase the sun, skip town, and soak it all in. With families wrapping up summer vacation and the pace starting to slow, it’s a great time to travel. Soak up the last of the summer sun at breezy beach destinations or cool off at higher altitudes.
Here are some of our favorite August destinations that deliver peak summer vibes with a little more breathing room.
Hilton Head, SCWarm end-of-summer weather makes Hilton Head a beach lover’s paradise, ideal for long days by the ocean and refreshing dips in the Atlantic. Start your morning with a stroll or bike ride along shady trails or the shoreline at low tide. In the afternoon, hop on a kayak, paddle board, jet ski, or boat to spot dolphins just offshore. Looking for a fun night out? Set sail on a dinner cruise with live music and cocktails under the stars. And if you’ve got kids in tow, be sure to catch HarbourFest at Shelter Cove with music, activities, and fireworks every Tuesday night in August.

The French AlpsThe French Alps offer a breathtaking mix of mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and storybook towns just waiting to be explored. Stroll the fairy-tale streets of Annecy, often called the “Venice of the Alps,” or head to Megève for luxury shopping, and culinary delights from cozy fondue spots to Michelin-starred dining. For some adventure, hit the trails in Parc National des Écrins, home to over 40 glaciers and 100 dramatic peaks. Or pay a visit to Évian-les-Bains on Lake Geneva for a dreamy spa town made for lakeside lounging and wellness escapes. Be sure to visit an alpine farm to sample local cheese and wine against a jaw-dropping mountain backdrop.
A festive waterfront scene in Newport Beach, visually echoing the vibrant energy of the film festival and its community gatherings.
Newport Beach, CAWith sunny skies and ocean breezes, Newport Beach is a classic spot to soak up the California coast. Cruise through the harbor or head out on a whale-watching tour (August is prime time to spot humpback whales and playful bottlenose dolphins). Take a stroll around Balboa Island, a charming, walkable gem known for its boutiques, waterfront paths, and old-school fun at the Balboa Fun Zone. And don’t skip the iconic Balboa Bar—a chocolate-dipped ice cream treat that locals and visitors adore. The ocean’s warm enough for swimming and surfing, and the food scene is just as inviting, with everything from fresh seafood and beachside bites to elevated dining with a view.

Vancouver, BCAugust is a beautiful time to visit Vancouver, with sunny days, low humidity, and long daylight hours—perfect for exploring. Bike or stroll the scenic trails of Stanley Park, or head out on the water with a harbor cruise, whale-watching tour, or wildlife-spotting boat trip.Unwind on one of the city’s beaches, then wander through Gastown, where cobblestone streets, Victorian buildings, and spooky storytelling tours bring Vancouver’s pioneer past to life. Over on Granville Island, food lovers can browse the beloved Public Market for fresh, artisan eats. For even more flavor, head to the Richmond Night Market—a weekend favorite filled with global street food and a buzzing open-air vibe.
Glacier National ParkSummer is in full swing at Glacier National Park in August, with wildflowers still in bloom, active wildlife, and weather ideal for hiking and exploring. It’s one of the few months when nearly all trails, lodges, and visitor facilities are fully open—making it a true bucket-list experience. Drive the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road, and stop for awe-inspiring views at Hidden Lake Overlook, the family-friendly trail to Avalanche Lake, or the more challenging but unforgettable trek to Grinnell Glacier. Cool nights are perfect for stargazing, and lower water levels make the lakes especially clear—just right for a peaceful paddleboarding session. If you’re lucky, you might even spot mountain goats, moose, or a bear in the distance.
