A letter from our CEO

Published Date: January 5, 2023

I always dreamed of owning a holiday home. As a kid, I’d hear friends talk about their family’s special getaways, and I imagined what it must be like to have your own little escape, a place you looked forward to visiting year after year. I grew up, but I held onto that dream, and my wife and I were finally able to make it a reality a few years ago when we bought a second home in Lake Tahoe. Still, it was a stretch financially, and the only way we could make it work at the time was to rent it out when we were not there. We felt privileged to own the home, but the stress and hassle of managing a rental to help pay the mortgage was burdensome.I discovered that most second homes are underutilised by their owners — 10 or 11 months of the year they’re rented out, like ours, or sitting vacant. At the same time, there are millions of people who would love to own a second home, but they look at prices and think it’s out of reach.

We are driven by our mission

My experience of second home ownership — both the overwhelming gratitude and the occasional frustration — planted the seed for Pacaso. I thought, “What if we could make it easier for more people to own a holiday home and enjoy all the benefits, but with fewer hassles and less expense?” In pursuit of a solution, I teamed up with my friend and colleague Spencer Rascoff, the former CEO of Zillow, and we created Pacaso. Pacaso’s mission is to enrich lives by making second home ownership possible and enjoyable for more people. And the two most important words in that sentence are “enrich lives” — that belief drives everything we do and every decision we make.

We’ve created a Crew-first culture

Crew members are the backbone of Pacaso, and we foster a culture that puts employees first.  We’re a fully and intentionally distributed company with a highly efficient, collaborative remote work environment. To ensure the success of this model for our Crew, we offer practical support, like a stipend for your home office setup and flexibility across time zones, and we double down on communication and transparency. We come together weekly for All Crew meetings and channel-focused brown bag brunches, and I regularly share company news on my #AustinTalk Slack channel. The entire leadership team is committed to transparency around the issues that affect your job, like compensation and hiring practices. More on our best-in-class benefits. We’re also committed to building a diverse and inclusive workforce, and we’ve invested in equity and inclusion since day one. We want Pacaso to be as diverse as the owners it serves. I strongly believe that enriching the lives of our customers and our Crew means creating an environment that values diverse experiences and ideas, and fosters tolerance and respect. More on our equitable hiring philosophy.

We move fast

Passion, momentum and drive — those are three words you’ll often hear people use to describe working at Pacaso. We are a high-growth, fast-paced startup fuelled by a high-energy Crew and a team of seasoned, innovative leaders. You’ll love working here if you are ambitious, self-directed and excited to push our mission forward. We’ll expect you to roll with change, because we’re constantly adapting, and to be thinking ahead to what’s next. If you’re ready to do the best work of your career, Pacaso is a place where you can thrive.
