When it comes to ritzy residences, many of America’s affluent buyers go for waterfront villas or skyscraper penthouses. But there are a select, daring few for whom resale value has no meaning, who instead plunge their hard-earned cash into the construction of castles, caves or even floating cathedrals. We’ve selected five unique properties to entertain, enlighten and maybe even inspire you — plus a more attainable option you can enjoy today.

Biggest: Mega compound in Beverly Hills, CA

Price: $250 millionAs the priciest property on our list — and as one of the priciest private residences ever — let’s start big with this million-dollar home of all million-dollar homes. Once completed, $250 million will get you 37 acres in Beverly Hills and 78,000 square feet of living space, along with the record for the most expensive residence ever sold in California. Features of this hilltop compound include 19 bedrooms, 33 bathrooms, indoor and outdoor pools, a bowling alley, several car galleries, a spa, yoga studio, gym and a 36-seat theater.

Most magical: Fairytale castle in Woodstock, CT

Price: $4.3 millionFrom its majestic moat to its towering turrets, this 18,777-square-foot Connecticut castle looks like it has been plucked straight from a fairy tale. Gothic arches, elaborate iron scrollwork and cut stone make up the imposing exterior, with intricately inlaid wood floors, mural-painted tray ceilings and polished spiral staircases filling its interior spaces. This million-dollar home is set on 75 acres overlooking a 35-acre lake, and contains 8 bedrooms and 7.5 bathrooms.

Oddest: No-bedroom mansion in Dallas, TX

Price: $989,000It may look like an ordinary house on the outside, but this almost-million-dollar home is anything but. This zero-bedroom, one-half-bath, 6,000-square-foot property blends right in with its residential neighbors on Southview Court in Dallas, but it was actually built to house electrical equipment for public utility use. The windows are fake, and the house has three generators and no kitchen. The stark interior looks more like a suburban office building than a home. This nearly million-dollar home may have potential, but it’s definitely a fixer-upper.

Most fun: Entertaining estate in Wentzville, MO

Price: $20 millionIf fun is the name of your game, this estate is for you. Amenities include two exercise gyms, indoor basketball court, theater, bar, bowling alley, dance floor, a two-story library and conference room. And with seven bedrooms and 13 bathrooms across 15,638 square feet, there’s plenty of room for friends and family to join you. Entertainment also extends to the 20-acre outdoor space, with a lake, pool, waterslides, lazy river, sports field, horse stables and playground with a miniature ferris wheel.

Most extreme: Underground bunker in Las Vegas, NV

Price: $6 millionAt first glance, you might not notice anything particularly unusual about this ranch style Las Vegas home — that is, until you look closer and realize that’s not sky above its roof … it’s ceiling. Known as the Las Vegas Underground House, this luxury bunker estate is underground and comes with a 5,000-square-foot main residence, 450-square-foot guest house and 500 linear feet of painted landscape murals surrounding an astroturf lawn with faux foliage and a pool.
